Bluesound’s streaming products have been a gateway drug for budget-conscious audiophiles for over ten years. At Creative Audio we always put sound quality first, and we’ve appreciated how Bluesound does the same when compared to other mass-market brands (ahem, Sonos). With the NODE NANO, Bluesound has brought this incredible sound quality to a new low price. How have they done it? By stripping all but the most essential features from the standard NODE. In the end, Bluesound has managed to almost entirely preserve the superb sonic quality of the NODE while offering it in a smaller package and at a more affordable price.
The Bluesound NODE NANO is part of Bluesound’s latest generation of streamers using the ESS ES9039Q2M DAC. Our impression is that this new architecture delivers a slightly livelier sound than we are accustomed to from Bluesound, but this is no bad thing. We have to remember that the NODE NANO is an entry-level streamer and as such we compare it primarily to using Bluetooth from a phone or tablet, or even a wired connection from a portable device. While all of those solutions will “work”, when you switch to the NODE NANO, the music simply comes alive. Switch back and everything falls flat; the difference really is quite dramatic. When compared to other, more affordable streamers, what we notice is how the Bluesound manages to avoid an etchiness or hardness in the high frequencies that the others succumb to.
The biggest question is: does the regular NODE sound better? We’d say it does, though admittedly the margins are small. Both share the same basic audio architecture, however the full-sized NODE presumably benefits from a better power supply. When we compare the two, we notice slightly more low-level resolution and more texture, particularly in the midrange and bass. Again, these differences are slight and may not be enough to justify the added cost of the regular NODE. This makes the NODE NANO an absolute bargain to our ears.

The Bluesound NODE NANO will sound great right out of the box, but it will sound even better after 50-100 hours of use.
A wired ethernet connection is always recommended, if possible.
