— What Hi-Fi? Review (5 star)

The Creative Audio Review

There is no denying that in the hobby of hi-fi, investing more in your system will yield a greater return in terms of musical enjoyment. But what about those times when there isn’t any more money available? Should one just give up? Not when there are components like the Cambridge Audio AXA35. To say we love this amplifier would be an understatement, and the reason we love it is because it doesn’t try to be anything it isn’t. Instead, it focuses on making the best music it can given its price point. No, it’s not a powerhouse and no, it doesn’t have any digital or Bluetooth inputs. It makes up for these shortcomings with a wonderfully engaging sound. If you’ve never heard a good hi-fi system before and you find the AXA35 catches your attention: that is what great audio is all about. This amp makes great music. What is great music? Deep and controlled bass, yes. Detailed and delicate high frequencies, yes. Most important though is the midrange, after all this is where the all-important vocals are found. The Cambridge Audio AXA35 avoids the trap many budget amps fall into by only focusing on the ‘boom and tizz’ of the bass and treble in an effort to be noticed and distract from a muddy midrange. Instead, with the AXA35 you get a neutral and lifelike representation of the midrange, and it blends seamlessly with the frequency extremes at both ends. Have you ever seen your favourite musician perform live and felt that they were ‘on’? That is how we would describe this sound; everything is just right. Just how we like it. This is a budget amp to be sure, and with it comes the caveat that you can only expect so much. But if you’re looking for an affordable system or just starting out on your hi-fi journey, this amp should definitely be on your shortlist.
