The Grado RS1x in greater detail

Grado continues to hone the artistry of their headphone design with this, the flagship model of their Reference Series. There are many firsts in this design. The enclosure, for the first time, combines three materials: cocobolo, maple, and hemp, giving the RS1x not only a unique look but an engaging sound. Another first for the Reference Series: Grado’s larger 50mm driver.

Of course that driver has been tuned to the acoustic properties of the unique open-back enclosure. Just as the wood used in a fine instrument affects its timbre, so too do the materials of a headphone enclosure. Grado has chosen the materials in the RS1x for their acoustic benefit, and then tuned the driver to take advantage of these properties to deliver that classic Grado sound. There is an effortless quality to the performance of the RS1x that is immediately apparently. While its junior sibling the RS2x is an incredible performer, there is no denying the massive leap in performance to be had here.

Sound Advice

The Grado RS1x will sound great right out of the box but they will sound even better after around 50 hours of use, a period known as ‘break in’. During this time the suspension of the drivers will relax and the end result is a deeper, more natural bass and smoother high frequency extension.
You can plug the RS1x directly into your phone, tablet, or computer, but with a premium headphone such as this we’d strongly recommend a dedicated headphone amp.
