The Grado RS2x in greater detail

The design of the enclosure on your headphones plays a dramatic role in their sound quality and character. Even the slightest unwanted resonance can distort the sound and mask precious details. Grado’s Reference series has always featured wood enclosures and with this latest series we now see combinations of materials - in the case of the RS2x, maple is combined with hemp.

We were stunned when we first heard this new design. The previous model always received rave reviews and it was hard to imagine how much more detail they could wring out of the design. The new model is almost impossible to put down. Now, Grado has always been known for their incredibly accurate midrange - the hallmark of a quality stereo system. Somehow they have moved the goal posts again. Listening to these new cans reveals a subtle veil masked the previous model. It’s like a someone tweaked the focus dial and even though it was only a slight change, the overall effect is massive. The new RS2x is also faster, conveying a more accurate sense of timing. Everything sounds just right - and oh so addictive.

Our one-line review? Actually, we’re going to make this a one-word review: smashing.

Sound Advice

The Grado RS2x will sound great right out of the box but they will sound even better after around 50 hours of use, a period known as ‘break in’. During this time the suspension of the drivers will relax and the end result is a deeper, more natural bass and smoother high frequency extension.
You can plug the RS2x directly into your phone, tablet, or computer, but with a premium headphone such as this we’d strongly recommend a dedicated headphone amp.
