If you’ve got an aging CD player (think 10-plus years old), upgrading to a modern unit like the Marantz CD6007 will show you just how far digital reproduction has come. The first thing we noticed when we listened to the CD6007 is how UN-digital it sounds; there’s no hint of brightness or harshness here. You’ll hear loads of detail - whether its the texture in Frank Sinatra’s voice or the clarity of a full symphony recording - and yet the sound is never fatiguing. The bass is deep and defined, as Massive Attack will prove. As we listened we had to keep reminding ourselves that this is Marantz’s entry-level CD spinner. Now, step-up to one of the CD6007’s bigger siblings and you’ll definitely get more resolution, particularly in imaging and soundstage size, as well as a greater sense of cohesion in denser tracks and styles, but this machine is no slouch and we really feel it over-performs for its price point.
