The Creative Audio Review

Your system can only be as good as the quality of the source. Pro-Ject’s Debut series certainly offers incredible value for money, but you can definitely extract more from your favourite grooves with models like their X2 B. What you get here is a more solid base (literally) thanks to the 2 kg acryl platter and a more accurate, electronically controlled motor. You also get the superb Ortofon Quintet Red moving coil (MC) cartridge, pre-mounted and aligned. Lastly, thanks to its revolutionary design, you can (with an optional cable) get a truly balanced output from the cartridge. What does all of this mean? Quite simply: better sound and, when compared to the Debut series, we’d say better by a very wide margin. You can identify the Pro-Ject house sound immediately: this is a ‘table that delivers a wonderfully rich analog sound. Compared to the Debut series, however, there is vastly more low-level resolution on tap. This not only brings subtle details out from the shadows, but it also presents a substantially larger and more precise soundstage. The bass is deeper and more controlled, while the high frequencies are far more nuanced. The Pro-Ject X2 B is a big sounding turntable; you’ll be surprised at the scale of the sound on offer, even if you using compact bookshelf speakers. Now of course we’d expect the X2 B to perform better than the Debut Carbon EVO given the price but the good news is that it does and then some! This model from Pro-Ject represents tremendous value for someone looking for more than an entry-level vinyl rig.

Sound Advice

  • The Pro-Ject X1 B will sound great right out of the box, but it will sound even better after 25-50 hours of use, when the cartridge has had a chance to break in.

  • For best results, be sure to place the turntable on a flat and level surface.

  • Before playing, you should always remove any surface dust from the record using a quality anti-static carbon fibre record brush.
