The Creative Audio Review
The Rega Planar 3 RS has only just arrived in our showroom, so we haven’t had a chance to put it through its paces. Given the legendary status of the Planar 3 on which it is based, we are expecting amazing things. Watch this space for our forthcoming review!
A Legend Refined
The Planar 3 is a time-honoured legend in high-end audio, and easily Rega’s best-selling turntable. With the RS version, Rega has taken their design principles further, creating a more rigid plinth and including the outboard Neo power supply unit in the package. Power from the motor is transferred to the sub-platter via Rega’s Reference EBLT drive belt further enhancing speed stability. Also included is the new Rega Nd5 cartridge with neodymium magnet system. This is a carefully chosen enhanced package which brings the performance of the Planar 3 to a new level.
Exacting
A critical component of the Rega Planar 3 RS is the engineering marvel that is the RB330 tonearm. This tonearm is so widely regarding in the audio industry that many other turntable manufacturers use this arm on their own high-end turntable. It’s tapered, one-piece design with integrated bearing housing for the high tolerance bearing offers minimal unwanted resonance and near-frictionless movement.
Precise
The Neo PSU has always offered Planar 3 owners a massive upgrade opportunity, and it is included with the Planar 3 RS. This unit provides a cleaner drive of power to the Planar 3’s 24V motor, reducing unwanted vibration in the motor and providing greater speed stability. It also provides the convenience of electronic speed control - with just the push of a button you can toggle between 33 and 45 RPM.
Creative Audio Pro Tips
The Rega Planar 3 RS will sound great right out of the box, but it will sound even better after 25-50 hours of use, when the cartridge has had a chance to break in.
Be sure to place the turntable on a flat and level surface.
To minimize hum, do not place the turntable on top of an amplifier or any other electronic components. The power transformer in those components may induce hum in the turntable’s pick up cartridge.
Before playing, you should always remove any surface dust from the record using a quality anti-static carbon fibre record brush.
For best results, remove the dust cover during playback.
