The Creative Audio Review

Demo track: anything. We love music. Every brand and every product in our curated catalogue has been chosen because we think they all make great music. There are a handful that are ridiculously special, however, and the Rega Planar 3 is one of them. If we had to pick one word to describe it, we would choose ‘overachiever’. The design is simple, so simple that you almost can’t imagine it would be that special. There is purpose in the design and that purpose is to reproduce not just musical notes and rhythm but the emotional soul of the music. At Creative Audio we firmly believe in a ‘source first’ approach to system design; all the other components in your system can only be as good as the source. When you invest in a source like the Rega Planar 3, you’ve set the stage for a damn fine audio system.

Legendary

The Planar 3 is the heart of Rega’s turntable line-up and its award-winning performance is known around the world. This, the latest version, features a unique bracing system that increases the rigidity of the plinth and reduces unwanted resonances. Rega’s EBLT Advanced drive belt transfers the torque from the 24V low-noise motor to the sub-platter which turns the heavy glass platter. Every component works in unison to deliver an astonishing musical performance.

Exacting

A critical component of the Rega Planar 3 is the engineering marvel that is the RB330 tonearm. This tonearm is so widely regarding in the audio industry that many other turntable manufacturers use this arm on their own high-end designs. It’s tapered, one-piece design with integrated bearing housing for the high tolerance bearing offers minimal unwanted resonance and near-frictionless movement.

Upgradeable

Out of the box, the Rega Planar 3 is the best-performing turntable in its price range (and we’d argue beyond, too!). It is also a fantastic platform for future upgrades, allowing you to get even more out of your investment in this superstar. Rega’s Neo PSU outboard power supply will shock you at the jump in performance it offers. The RB330 tonearm is so good it is worthy of some pretty high-end cartridges, including Rega’s own fantastic range of moving coil (MC) models. The Planar 3 is a long-term audio investment that will pay itself back countless times over.

Creative Audio Pro Tips

  • The Rega Planar 3 will sound great right out of the box, but it will sound even better after 25-50 hours of use, when the cartridge has had a chance to break in.

  • Be sure to place the turntable on a flat and level surface.

  • To minimize hum, do not place the turntable on top of an amplifier or any other electronic components. The power transformer in those components may induce hum in the turntable’s pick up cartridge.

  • Before playing, you should always remove any surface dust from the record using a quality anti-static carbon fibre record brush.

  • For best results, remove the dust cover during playback.
