The Grado SR80x in greater detail
We’ll cut right to the chase: the SR80x is worth every extra cent over its entry-level sibling. In our store they always outsell the SR60x, and by no slim margin. Listen to them and you’ll quickly understand why; while still affordable, every aspect of their performance is improved.
There are two things in particular that jump out at us with this model: improved bass response in both depth and defintion, and a larger soundstage. Focus on the space around the musicians and you’ll notice there is more of it, and their positions are more clearly defined. Hi-fi is all about accuracy and these cans have it in spades. The bass goes deeper too, but not with artificial boom. Instead, you get weight and clarity. Every genre of music sounds great with these and you’ll often have to remind yourself that you’re listening to a set of budget headphones.
Our one-line review: if you like the SR60x, buy the SR80x. It’s that simple.
Sound Advice
The Grado SR80x will sound great right out of the box but they will sound even better after around 50 hours of use, a period known as ‘break in’. During this time the suspension of the drivers will relax and the end result is a deeper, more natural bass and smoother high frequency extension.
You can plug the Grado SR80x directly into your phone, tablet, or computer, but you’ll get an even better experience with a dedicated headphone amp.
