At a kitchen table in Brooklyn in 1950, Joseph Grado began building phono cartridges by hand. A watchmaker at Tiffany & Co., it wasn’t long before demand exceeded the capacity of his homegrown operation, and in 1953 Grado Laboratories was born. In 1959 the company was awarded patents for the very first stereo moving coil cartridge. For three decades the company would continue to grow and eventually become an industry leader in the hi-fi industry.
It was in 1991, after Joseph’s son John purchased the company, that Grado produced their first headphone. In this year too John’s son Johnathan was born. Today, Johnathan runs the company that is most famous for its extensive range of hi-fi headphones. Every one of their wired designs is built by hand in the same factory where it all started, in Brooklyn. Grado has developed an enviable reputation and won countless awards for their designs. Today they focus on exploring the acoustic properties of natural materials such as maple, mahogany, and cocobolo woods, as well as metals, and using them to their advantage to deliver an incredibly neutral and natural timbre. A favourite of John Mayer and many other musicians, Grado headphones have given music lovers new insight into their favourite songs.
