Even as a hi-fi retailer, we approach cabling with a high degree of skepticism. This is an aspect of home audio that is rife with misinformation and many stratospherically priced products of questionable merit. We feel it was serendipitous that we connected with Shunyata Research, and the Venom-X was the first of their speaker cables that we tested before bringing the line on.

Speak with anyone at Shunyata Research and they will stress the importance of the cables of an audio system, and we absolutely agree. More importantly, however, they agree with us that cables should not be used as tone controls. If a cable is altering the signal to the point of adjusting the tone, then it is distorting the signal which means it is masking important detail. Cables should be matched to the quality level of the components they are connecting, and should allow those components to reveal their true capability.

When we first connected the Venom-X speaker cable to our system (Naim NAP 250 power amplifier and Focal Sopra No. 2 speakers), the improvement was immediately apparent. After an extended listening session we were able to confirm that the Venom-X was reinforcing all of the qualities of this setup. The Naim amplifier is known for it’s dynamic presentation and effortless musicality. The Sopra’s are gloriously detailed but never strident or forward, and to our ears have a slightly ‘dark’ quality to their sound which is highly alluring. With the Venom-X, all of this became more apparent. We also noticed an improvement in microdynamics…suddenly the subtlties of complex tracks became clear. It was an astounding improvement and we were hooked.

Even more telling was when we disconnected the cable to lend it to a client for audition. Forced to revert back to the previous cable, we immediately missed the Venom-X. We never did get it back…our client loved it too much. So of course we called Shunyata and told them to send us another set, stat!

Everything you may have heard about the Venom-X line is true; this series truly offers a level of performance we would not expect at this price point. Shunyata has obviously realised this, as ever since the introduction of the Venom-X line, they have since worked to revamp the rest of their line-up.
