— What Hi-Fi? Review of the Sonus faber Lumina I

The Creative Audio Review

We think small rooms deserve high-end audio too. Enter the adorable Sonus faber Lumina I. You can feel the premium build quality as you lift the speakers out of the box. The leather-wrapped cabinet is a nice, soft touch. We also love the detail in the wood front panel with its maple inlays. This is a level of luxury unheard of at this price point.

They may be small, but their sound is anything but. The Italian soundsmiths at Sonus faber have achieved something really special with the Lumina I. Take Joni Mitchell’s 2000 rendition of ‘Both Sides Now’, where even the finest textural detail in her beautifully aged voice is evident. You can hear the emotion that conveys the experience of a life lived between this recording and the 1969 original. Comparing the hi-res 96/24 version of this recording to the original CD reveals the tremendous reservoir of resolution on tap in the Sonus faber Lumina I.

Most compact speakers try too hard to impress and yet we find the Lumina I is poised and confident, allowing some real musical insight to shine through. We love how they capture the melancholy within the beat of ‘Being Boring’ by the Pet Shop Boys. This is what high-end audio is all about. Throw some Tool or Rage Against the Machine at them and you’ll be surprised. Here is where Sonus faber works its signature magic; vocals and percussion take centre stage and are so lifelike and yet so smooth. Combined with the soft silk dome tweeter, you can be sure the Lumina I will never sound harsh.

Now, talented though they are, the Sonus faber designers can’t bend the laws of physics. Bass performance is enhanced by placing the Lumina I close to the back wall, but if you find yourself needing more depth and drive you should consider the larger Lumina II model. Within the confines of its physical capabilities however, the Sonus faber Lumina I hits it out of the ballpark in terms of sheer emotion, detail, and musical energy.

Handcrafted in Italy

In the Italian province of Vicenza, at the northeastern tip of the country, is where you’ll find the home of Sonus faber. For over 40 years this has been the birthplace of some of the audio industry’s most stunning and admired speaker designs. The human touch is key to their philosophy and all of their speaker models, including the entry-level Lumina series, are built by hand. Sonus faber designs and manufactures all of their own drive units. Woodwork and lacquering duties are outsourced to neighbouring specialists in Vicenza. Sonus faber speakers are the result of true artisanal craftsmanship.

Silk dome tweeters

Sonus faber speakers feature soft silk dome tweeters, as they believe this design allows for a sound that is more natural, warm, and nuanced than metal or other materials. The unique Damped Apex Dome seeks to eliminate unwanted resonances and out-of-phase movement at the apex of the tweeter dome. This unique design allows the soft dome to retain its characteristic wide dispersion but without unwanted colouration of the sound.

Paper pulp and natural fibres

Sonus faber designs and manufactures their own drive units, giving them absolute control over the sound signature of their speakers. Their main driver cones are made from a combination of cellulose and other natural fibres which reproduce sound in a way much different from cones made from metals or other synthetic materials. With its rough and slightly irregular surface, this material works to eliminate unwanted resonances and deliver the signature sound of Sonus faber: warm, organic, and musical.

Sound Advice

  • The Sonus faber Lumina I will sound great from the moment you start playing them, but they will sound even better after 50-75 hours of use, after the drivers are broken in.

  • With a compact bookshelf speaker such as the Sonus faber Lumina I, placement closer to the back wall will help reinforce bass frequencies for a fuller sound at all volume levels.

  • A good quality speaker wire with banana plug connectors will give the Sonus faber Lumina I the opportunity to sound its best.
