The Creative Audio Review

Sonus faber has been handcrafting speakers in Italy for over 40 years. Famous for their beautiful cabinetry, it’s nice to see a gorgeous slab of solid wood on the front of the Lumina II, the larger of the two bookshelf models in the entry-level Lumina series. It’s worth pointing out that these models are built by hand in Italy, just like their (much) more expensive siblings are.

We love the smaller Lumina I, however put on a track like ‘Give Life Back to Music’ by Daft Punk, and one can’t deny there is a compromise in such a small design. The slightly larger Lumina II not only offers more bass depth, but a more effortless and dynamic performance; it doesn’t have to work as hard and you can hear it. There is also a significantly larger soundstage as well.

There’s more detail and subtlety on tap as well. Play the drumless version of that same track and you’ll be amazed at the layers of texture and detail. Sonus faber is famous for their natural sound, one that is detailed and organic and warm. This is wonderfully apparent on electronic music like Daft Punk’s, which sounds simultaneously natural and yet unmistakably electronic.

Like all Sonus faber speakers, there is magic in their vocal presentation. We love Johnny Cash and it seems Sonus faber does too, for he comes through these speakers with startling realism. We want to use that word natural again because we really can’t think of a better word. As we listen to ‘Five Feet High and Rising’ the Man in Black might as well be in the room with us as his music floods forth from these compact speakers.

Listen to these for awhile and it’s hard to believe that so much sound is coming out of such a small speaker. For some the smaller Lumina I will be the right choice based on room dimensions or placement restrictions. If you can accommodate the Lumina II, however, you won’t regret it. An absolute star.

Handcrafted in Italy

In the Italian province of Vicenza, at the northeastern tip of the country, is where you’ll find the home of Sonus faber. For over 40 years this has been the birthplace of some of the audio industry’s most stunning and admired speaker designs. The human touch is key to their philosophy and all of their speaker models, including the entry-level Lumina series, are built by hand. Sonus faber designs and manufactures all of their own drive units. Woodwork and lacquering duties are outsourced to neighbouring specialists in Vicenza. Sonus faber speakers are the result of true artisanal craftsmanship.

Silk dome tweeters

Sonus faber speakers feature soft silk dome tweeters, as they believe this design allows for a sound that is more natural, warm, and nuanced than metal or other materials. The unique Damped Apex Dome seeks to eliminate unwanted resonances and out-of-phase movement at the apex of the tweeter dome. This unique design allows the soft dome to retain its characteristic wide dispersion but without unwanted colouration of the sound.

Paper pulp and natural fibres

Sonus faber designs and manufactures their own drive units, giving them absolute control over the sound signature of their speakers. Their main driver cones are made from a combination of cellulose and other natural fibres which reproduce sound in a way much different from cones made from metals or other synthetic materials. With its rough and slightly irregular surface, this material works to eliminate unwanted resonances and deliver the signature sound of Sonus faber: warm, organic, and musical.

Sound Advice

  • The Sonus faber Lumina II will sound great from the moment you start playing them, but they will sound even better after 50-75 hours of use, after the drivers are broken in.

  • For best results, we recommend a 6-12” distance from the back of the speaker to the wall behind it.

  • A good quality speaker wire will give the Sonus faber Lumina II the opportunity to sound its best.
