The Creative Audio Review
Gone are the days of floorstanding or tower speakers being bulky and ugly. The proportions of the slender Sonus faber Lumina III are perfectly chosen and the leather wrap and solid wood front panel, common to all Lumina models, makes them look and feel significantly more expensive than they are.
Much like the smaller Lumina I bookshelf model, the Lumina III is a speaker that knows what it is capable of and doesn’t try to over-extend itself. Being a floorstander, there is inherently more bass on tap than with a bookshelf speaker. Still, this is a small floorstander and so you won’t be tearing the walls down with it. For greater bass depth, detail, and dynamics you will need to look at larger, more expensive models.
For many though, the Lumina III will be more than enough and the sonic trade-off is more than worth this speaker’s unobtrusive nature. There is also some absolutely amazing sound on tap here. We love the high frequency presentation which is simultaneously detailed and extended and yet so utterly smooth. How it crosses over into the midrange makes for a highly listenable design that is never fatiguing.
There is real insight here. Compare, for example, ‘Down to Zero’ by Joan Armatrading and Tracy Chapman’s ‘Fast Car’. The comparison is apt, for even though each of these talents stands alone, the common thread is the raw emotion in their performances and the Sonus faber Lumina III absolutely captures this. For those who are new to high end audio the experience can be intense, but that is what this hobby is all about.
Sonus faber’s Lumina series was designed to bring their sonic and aesthetic signature to a wider audience and the Lumina III does just that.
Handcrafted in Italy
In the Italian province of Vicenza, at the northeastern tip of the country, is where you’ll find the home of Sonus faber. For over 40 years this has been the birthplace of some of the audio industry’s most stunning and admired speaker designs. The human touch is key to their philosophy and all of their speaker models, including the entry-level Lumina series, are built by hand. Sonus faber designs and manufactures all of their own drive units. Woodwork and lacquering duties are outsourced to neighbouring specialists in Vicenza. Sonus faber speakers are the result of true artisanal craftsmanship.
Silk dome tweeters
Sonus faber speakers feature soft silk dome tweeters, as they believe this design allows for a sound that is more natural, warm, and nuanced than metal or other materials. The unique Damped Apex Dome seeks to eliminate unwanted resonances and out-of-phase movement at the apex of the tweeter dome. This unique design allows the soft dome to retain its characteristic wide dispersion but without unwanted colouration of the sound.
Paper pulp and natural fibres
Sonus faber designs and manufactures their own drive units, giving them absolute control over the sound signature of their speakers. Their main driver cones are made from a combination of cellulose and other natural fibres which reproduce sound in a way much different from cones made from metals or other synthetic materials. With its rough and slightly irregular surface, this material works to eliminate unwanted resonances and deliver the signature sound of Sonus faber: warm, organic, and musical.

Sound Advice
The Sonus faber Lumina III will sound great from the moment you start playing them, but they will sound even better after 50-75 hours of use, after the drivers are broken in.
For best results, we recommend a 12-18” distance from the back of the speaker to the wall behind it.
A quality speaker wire will give the Sonus faber Lumina III the opportunity to sound its best.
