— 'What Hi-Fi?' 5-star Review of the Sonus faber Lumina V

The Creative Audio Review

The flagship of Sonus faber’s entry-level Lumina range, the Lumina V, embodies all of the series’ strengths in a typically gorgeous design. The leather wrapped cabinet and solid wood front panel bring Italian luxury while the drivers in this 3-way design, all made by Sonus faber themselves deliver the natural sound the company is famous for.

Running through all of the tracks we used in our reviews of the other Lumina models, it is clear that the Lumina V offers the best performance of the range. The soft silk dome tweeter and paper cone midrange combine to offer vocals that are beautifully textured, smoothly extended, and full of dynamic verve.

Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, and Joan Armatrading are excellent for demonstration not only for the unique character of their voices, but for the powerful emotion with which they sing. The Sonus faber Lumina V captures this emotion even amongst a busy soundstage of instruments. Of all the models, they have the best ability to resolve fine detail in even the busiest of passages.

Being a full-sized floorstander, there is also tremendous depth and dynamic attack available, giving the Lumina V’s sound a greater sense of life and accuracy. The depths of Daft Punk are reproduced without strain. There is also a great sense of speed here, something we value very highly in any speaker’s performance. Without it, bass lands with a thud. Here, it lands full of life, and life is exactly what music is!

Handcrafted in Italy

In the Italian province of Vicenza, at the northeastern tip of the country, is where you’ll find the home of Sonus faber. For over 40 years this has been the birthplace of some of the audio industry’s most stunning and admired speaker designs. The human touch is key to their philosophy and all of their speaker models, including the entry-level Lumina series, are built by hand. Sonus faber designs and manufactures all of their own drive units. Woodwork and lacquering duties are outsourced to neighbouring specialists in Vicenza. Sonus faber speakers are the result of true artisanal craftsmanship.

Silk dome tweeters

Sonus faber speakers feature soft silk dome tweeters, as they believe this design allows for a sound that is more natural, warm, and nuanced than metal or other materials. The unique Damped Apex Dome seeks to eliminate unwanted resonances and out-of-phase movement at the apex of the tweeter dome. This unique design allows the soft dome to retain its characteristic wide dispersion but without unwanted colouration of the sound.

Paper pulp and natural fibres

Sonus faber designs and manufactures their own drive units, giving them absolute control over the sound signature of their speakers. Their main driver cones are made from a combination of cellulose and other natural fibres which reproduce sound in a way much different from cones made from metals or other synthetic materials. With its rough and slightly irregular surface, this material works to eliminate unwanted resonances and deliver the signature sound of Sonus faber: warm, organic, and musical.

Sound Advice

  • The Sonus faber Lumina V will sound great from the moment you start playing them, but they will sound even better after 50-75 hours of use, after the drivers are broken in.

  • For best results, we recommend a 12-18” distance from the back of the speaker to the back wall.

  • A quality speaker wire will give the Sonus faber Lumina V the opportunity to sound its best.
